Saint Annamacharya: His Life and His Music
Tallapaka Annamacharya lived in the 15th century. As to the
exact year of his birth, threedates are presently available. The musicologists, Veturi Prabhakara Sastry, V. Raghavan and
S. Janaki Raman date his birth to the year 1408 A.D. or Saalivahanasakam 1330. Veturi Anandamurthy dates it to 1424 A.D. or
Saalivahanasakam 1346. Annamayya’s grandson Chinnanna, in his biographical account ‘Annamayya Charitram’
notes that his grandfather was born on Vaisakha Sukla Chaturdasi, in the year Krodhi, under the star Visakha. He was
born in Tallapaka village of Cuddapah District in Rajampet Taluk, Andhra Pradesh. His parents were Narayansuri and Lakkamamba.He
had two wives - Akklamma and Timmakka. His second wife Timmakka was the first poetess in Telugu literature. She authored the
book ‘Subhadra Kalyanam’.
His guru was Adivan Satagopa Yatindra. It is believed that Annamacharya
composed 32,000 songs. Thus far, Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanam (TTD) edited 13,800 songs and published them in 32 volumes.
Annamacharaya’s other literary works were Sringara Manjari, Dvipada Ramayanam,
Venkateswara Satakam, Sankeertana Lakshnam, Venkatachala Mahatyam and 12 Satakas. Saint Annamacharyya attained Maha Samadhi
in 1503 A.D. or Saalivahanasakam 1424 (year Dundhubhi, Phalguna Bahula Dwadasi).
